Articulation
The Lips, Teeth, & Tongue

About Articulation
Lips, teeth, and tongue: these are the primary structures – known as articulators – that allow us to turn vocal sound into intelligible speech. The ability to communicate concrete ideas through words is what sets the voice apart from all other musical instruments, and it’s important to understand articulatory function to reduce tension, improve sound, and enhance intelligibility. In this section, we will engage with the anatomy of vowel and consonant creation, emphasizing the importance of flexibility among all structures. In short, freer articulators result in an altogether freer vocal mechanism.
